Andy Williams, LCSW

I am a lifelong North Carolinian, having grown up in Durham, and with undergraduate and graduate degrees from UNC-Asheville and UNC-Chapel Hill, respectively.  Psychodynamically trained and relationally-oriented, I have practiced as an LCSW across all levels of North Carolina’s mental health system since 2007, utilizing an integrative approach that draws from diverse models and interventions such as attachment science, motivational interviewing, dialectical behavioral therapy, trauma-focused CBT, acceptance and commitment therapy, and mindfulness-based stress reduction.  In addition, since 2010, I have had the opportunity to mentor and supervise graduate student trainees and early-career clinicians in their professional development, including serving for nearly three years as the Director of Clinical Services for a 100+ bed psychiatric hospital.

While there are many different reasons for people to seek therapy, and many different ways to approach the work, I believe that good therapy always begins in the context of a safe and supportive relationship.  As such, I value a collaborative approach to therapy where feedback is encouraged and the course of treatment is responsive to individual needs and preferences.  I also believe that the symptoms that bring people to therapy have often begun as useful strategies for dealing with a particular life event or set of challenges, but have come to no longer be helpful in the present circumstances.  By understanding how we have adapted to the many forces that shape our lives, we can create opportunities to learn new skills or enhance old ones, respond to stress in more flexible and effective ways, deepen important connections, and move toward desired goals and outcomes.

I am particularly interested in collaborating with adolescents and adults around such issues as ADHD and executive functioning, stress management, trauma, anxiety, and mood disorders, with a broad goal of promoting emotional well-being and resiliency in the context of these particular issues.  If interested, please call me directly and I would be honored to consult and discuss in more detail whether my experience and approach to mental healthcare might be beneficial to you!
